The Kanta Services as part of social welfare and health care

With the help of the Kanta Services, patient and client data flow smoothly between different service providers and citizens. In practice, all public and private health care providers and pharmacies in Finland use the Kanta Services. The use of Kanta in the social welfare sector is also expanding rapidly.

In both public and private health care, medical personnel record data in their own patient information systems, from where the data are stored in the Kanta Services. In this way, up-to-date information is available throughout Finland.

Social welfare staff record data in client data systems, but it is not yet compulsory to record the data in Kanta. Social welfare services must start recording data in Kanta by 2026 at the latest.

The Kanta Services ensure the smooth sharing of data

The Kanta Services help patient and client data to move across organisational boundaries within public and private social welfare and health care and wellbeing services counties. This makes life easier for professionals and citizens alike.

When up-to-date data is available in a single place, professionals can easily gain a complete picture of their client’s wellbeing.

The data also moves securely with the citizen, even if their care provider or place of residence changes. Prescription information in an electronic format is stored safely and kept up-to-date.

Improved service and care

Sharing data between different social welfare and health care units ensures that professionals have up-to-date data to manage their client’s affairs. In this way, the Kanta Services improve client and patient safety as well as the quality of service and care.

The availability of data also saves professionals’ time. For example, the care provider can focus on the patient’s situation during an appointment rather than on recording data. In social welfare, the sharing of data makes it easier to form a picture of the client’s overall situation.

A nationwide system saves resources

The Kanta Services cover all of Finland, so data can be used in all public and private social welfare and health care services.

Service providers can improve their operations by using the Kanta Services. Costs that are saved can be allocated to promoting the health and wellbeing of citizens and to preventative care.

A constant stream of new users

The number of organisations providing social welfare and health care services using the Kanta Services is increasing.

When a service provider decides to deploy the Kanta Services or a functionality, they register for deployment. Registration is always open, allowing for flexible deployment on the provider’s own schedule. Kela co-ordinates and supports deployment.
